Serious risks

• VANOS solenoid & bolts: VANOS solenoid bolts can loosen/break. BMW issued recall for some models. VANOS solenoids themselves also wear.
• Valve cover / oil filter housing gasket: Oil leaks from valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket. Very common. Budget for replacement.
• Ignition coil failure: Coil packs can fail intermittently, causing misfires under load.
• Electric water pump failure: Same electric water pump as N52 — can fail without warning. Preventative replacement recommended.
• Oil pan gasket leak: Oil pan gasket can seep at higher mileage, leaving oil on undertray.
• Wastegate rattle / charge pipe: Wastegate can develop rattle. Plastic charge pipe can crack under boost. Aftermarket aluminium pipe is a permanent fix.

Additional notes

• BMW X5 diesel is the top luxury SUV in Bulgaria (1700+ listings). At 200k+ km: timing chain, DPF, turbo, swirl flaps, transfer case, and air suspension (if equipped) are all potential failure points.
• Diesel car from before 2018 with very low mileage suggests city-only use — DPF is likely clogged or has been removed (illegal). Check DPF status and EGR condition.
• BMW 730d (150+119 listings, avg 155-177k km, €35-37k) — flagship technology depreciates but repair costs don't. Air suspension (€2000+/corner), laser headlights (€3000+/unit), gesture control failures, ZF 8HP at high mileage. B57 engine is reliable but service intervals are expensive. Annual maintenance €3000-5000.
• BMW X6 diesel (199+154 listings, avg 148-176k km, €36-39k) — bought for image, expensive to maintain. Coupe-SUV body means unique (expensive) rear glass and body panels. N57/B57 3.0d is reliable but: transfer case service €1000+, adaptive dampers €2000+ per pair, 21-inch+ tires €1500+/set.
